In this episode, Derrick reconnects with one of the most impactful figures from his youth—Coach Paul Cunnie, a Daly City baseball legend with over 42 consecutive years of service as a player, umpire, coach, and program director. Coach Cunnie has coached more than 50 teams and helped lead both the Daly City Colts and the Joe DiMaggio program for athletes ages 15–19.
Derrick opens the episode with a deeply personal story about facing multiple rejections in youth baseball before finding a home—and a mentor—in Coach Cunnie's Daly City program. They reflect on that journey, the value of second chances, and how coaching shaped Derrick’s own path as both a mentor and a parent.
Together, they dive into how youth baseball has evolved, especially with the rise of travel teams, and discuss the lasting value of community-based sports. Coach Cunnie shares his perspective on what kids really need to succeed—on the field and in life—and offers timeless advice for parents and young coaches alike.
In a heartfelt post-show reflection, Derrick shares even more stories from his time coaching under Coach Cunnie, including a laugh-out-loud memory from the Peninsula Colts Tournament involving two late players, a train mishap, and a lineup that nearly didn’t get filled.
This episode is about much more than baseball—it’s about mentorship, resilience, and the lasting impact of coaches who believe in kids, even when others don’t.

In this episode of Parenting Like Superdad, Derrick shares a personal story about how his father’s early lessons in preparation and opportunity shaped the way he approaches youth sports with his own daughter. From Little League at age 7 to navigating early volleyball and basketball for his child, Derrick reflects on how planning ahead can give kids the confidence they need to succeed—before they ever step onto a school team.
This week’s guest is Coach Patrick Walsh, co-founder of Next Level Sports, a standout youth program offering expanded opportunities for kids to play, learn, and grow in competitive environments. Derrick and Coach Walsh discuss what makes Next Level Sports different, how to balance competition with development, and the long-term benefits of starting early.
Whether you're a parent thinking about how to support your child in sports or just love a good story about second chances, community, and coaching with heart—this episode is for you.

In this episode, I sit down with Ryan, a former colleague, youth coach, and parent, for a lively and thought-provoking conversation about one of the most debated topics in youth sports: participation trophies.
We dig into:
Why Ryan is firmly against participation trophies — and what he believes kids really need
The difference between recognizing effort vs. rewarding results
What coaching and sales management have in common (surprisingly, a lot!)
How parents can walk the line between encouragement and pressure
Why losing — yes, losing — might be one of the best teachers for kids
Whether you’re a parent, coach, or someone who still has a dusty little trophy on your shelf, this one will make you reflect.
Plus, stay tuned until the end for my personal reflection on intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation and the role we all play in helping kids grow.
